Based on Nickelodeon's computer animated feature film, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius lets players assume the titular role of the pre-teen super genius, whose brainy shenanigans and heady inventions usually get him into trouble with his strangely affable parents. One of his more endearing creations is his companion Goddard -- a fully functional (though problematic) robot dog. Accompanied by Goddard, Jimmy must recruit the kids of Retroville in an effort to rescue the town's parents from the clutches of the evil alien King Goobot and his hostile minions.
During each level of the adventure, Jimmy must find a number of key items and prizes in order to progress to the next stage of the game. For example, at Jimmy's House he must search his underground lab and other areas in order to find the necessary parts for use in assembling a rocket ship. While on the Asteroid Exterior, Jimmy's friends (including Carl Wheezer and Cindy Vortex) run away scared, forcing Jimmy to search for them so the gang can continue its rescue mission.
While searching for items to complete each mission, Jimmy will invariably run across weapons for use in fighting the aliens. These include the Shrink Ray, the Inflato Ray, and the Jimmy Bat. Jimmy can also pick up Blueberry Pie, which replenishes his health, and Neutrons, which grant him an extra life (for every ten found). From time to time, depending on the situation, Jimmy will commandeer three types of vehicles -- a pogo, a sled, and a scooter -- each of which is actually a transformed version of the ever faithful Goddard.
In addition to the standard 3D action, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius contains the Midway, which is found somewhere in Retroville and consists a number of mini-games, including Batting Game, Rocket Jump, Dunking Booth, Fortune Teller, Photo Booth, and Arcade Game, the latter of which is a side-scrolling shooter complete with laser fire, missile fire, bombs, and weapon power-ups. The package also contains the following DVD-style extra features: animated shorts, unlockable movie clips, a music movie montage, a home video trailer, and a "making-of" special.
